Appcues vs Pendo: In-App Engagement or Product Analytics First?
Appcues and Pendo both ship in-app guides without code. Compare how their plans are built, what each one measures, mobile and email support, and how to buy, so you can pick the one that fits.
Appcues and Pendo show up on the same shortlists, and neither one publishes a price.
That makes the usual shortcut, comparing two pricing pages, useless here. You have to compare what each product is built to do first, then let the sales calls fill in the numbers.
The short version is that they answer different first questions.
Appcues asks: what should we show users, and where? It's built around experiences: tours, checklists, launchpads, surveys, email and push, shipped by people who don't write code.
Pendo asks: what are users doing? It's built around product analytics, with guides, session replay, feedback and journeys added on top of that data.
Both do some of the other's job. The rest of this guide is about how much, on which plan. Details come from each vendor's own site, last checked on October 30 and 31, 2026.
If You Only Read One Section
Pick Appcues if your team's backlog is full of onboarding flows, feature announcements and nudges, you want in-app, email and push from one tool, and you want every feature on every plan.
Pick Pendo if analytics is the main job, you track several apps, you want session replay in the same tool, you want a free plan to start on, or you plan to grow into feedback and journey orchestration.

Two Ways To Package A Plan
The biggest structural difference is what a higher plan buys you.
Appcues says every plan includes every experience type, feature and integration. Plans differ in scale instead. Start covers up to 3,000 monthly active users, 10 published experiences and 12 months of reporting history. Grow starts at 3,000 MAU with 25 published experiences and 24 months of history. Enterprise has custom MAU, 100 published experiences, 36 months of history and priority support. Pricing is based on monthly active users, installations and published experiences.
Pendo does the opposite. Every plan has custom MAU volume, and the plans differ in features. Base includes product analytics and in-app guides. Core adds session replay. Ultimate adds sentiment surveys, Orchestrate journeys, Listen for product discovery and Data Sync. Features outside your plan are sold as extras.
In practice, the question for Appcues is "how many live experiences will we run?" The question for Pendo is "which modules do we need?"
Count your planned onboarding flows, checklists and announcements before the Appcues call. A cap of 10 published experiences on Start can be plenty for one onboarding path, or tight for a team that runs several segments at once.
Analytics
Both have more analytics than their reputations suggest, but they lean differently.
Appcues has its own product analytics: trends, funnels, paths, retention curves, segments, dashboards, and measures like active users, stickiness and sessions. Its analytics page doesn't mention session replay.
Pendo's analytics are the core of the product. Every plan includes retroactive analytics, so reports reach back to the day you installed it, without defining events first. Session replay comes with Core and is a paid extra on Base. Pendo Free includes analytics for up to 500 MAU, and Pendo's pricing page says tracking more applications doesn't raise the price.
If your first question is "why don't trial users reach value?", start with the product adoption signals you need, then check which tool can show them on the plan you'd buy. If you need to watch the sessions behind the numbers, Pendo has replay and Appcues doesn't list it.
Channels Beyond The App
Appcues runs email and push workflows alongside in-app experiences, and its mobile SDKs cover iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter and Ionic. That suits a team that wants one place to plan an onboarding sequence across the app, the inbox and the phone.
Pendo's mobile SDKs cover iOS, Android, React Native and Flutter, plus Compose and Kotlin Multiplatform, and Pendo Free includes mobile apps. Email arrives through Orchestrate, which builds journeys from guides and emails; it's part of Ultimate and a paid extra on Base and Core.
Measuring A Flow Or Guide
Both let you hold back a group that sees nothing.
Appcues runs control experiments on Flows. It splits newly eligible users into a group that sees the Flow and a control group, 50/50 by default, and compares goal conversions that happen within 7 days of each user's assignment.
Pendo's help center describes A/B tests that compare two guides, or one guide against a "No guide" group, on a page view, feature click or tracked event. It lists Guides Pro in your subscription as a requirement.
Both count product behavior. Neither counts revenue unless you send it in as an event, so an upgrade prompt that "converted" in either tool still needs a check in your billing system.
Buying Each One
Both start with a conversation.
Appcues offers a free trial with no credit card, after a call to confirm fit. Every customer gets implementation services, onboarding support and a dedicated experience manager, according to its pricing page. For small teams shipping their first in-app experiences, it also runs a Spark program.
Pendo offers a 30-day trial of the whole platform, set up through sales, and Pendo Free without a call. Its pricing page says the cost per MAU falls as you add more.
If you can't get a budget approved without a number, ask both for a quote at your real MAU count and the number of apps or experiences you plan to run.
Questions Teams Ask
Is Pendo free?
Pendo Free is free for up to 500 monthly active users and includes analytics, in-app guides and Pendo-branded roadmaps and NPS surveys. Past 500 MAU, you can't create new guides, NPS surveys or segments until you upgrade.
Does Appcues have a free plan?
No free plan is listed. Appcues offers a free trial after a call and a Spark program for small teams shipping their first in-app experiences.
Can either one change a customer's plan in Stripe?
No. Pendo's integrations page doesn't list a billing system. Appcues connects to Stripe one way, through Zapier: a Stripe event, such as a failed payment, can trigger an Appcues message, but Appcues can't change the subscription.
Making The Call
Write down the first three things you want to change in the first 90 days.
If they're flows, checklists and messages, Appcues is built for that, and its all-features plans keep you from hitting a module wall. If they're questions about usage you can't answer today, Pendo is built for that, and its guides let you act on the answer in the same tool.
Where Billing Comes In
Both tools stop at the subscription. When a user accepts an upgrade or asks to cancel, your own code still has to change the plan in Stripe.
SaaSFunnels works on that step for teams that bill with Stripe. Its Funnels for trial conversion, upgrades, failed payments and cancellations sell your real plans, apply the change in Stripe and count a result only when Stripe confirms it. It doesn't do tours or product-wide analytics, so it sits next to either tool; see the Appcues comparison for the details.
